How to Play Minesweeper: Beginner Rules, Numbers and Winning

What the numbers mean

Each revealed number counts the mines in the eight tiles surrounding it. A 1 has exactly one mine neighbor, a 3 has three, and so on. Numbers never include the tile they sit on.

The skill of minesweeper is combining overlapping numbers. If a 1 touches one unknown tile and no other unknown tiles, that tile must be a mine. If a 2 has two flagged neighbors already, every other neighbor is safe.

• Numbers count neighbors, including diagonals.
• A number is satisfied only when all its mines are found or flagged.
• Zero tiles reveal no mines and auto-open the surrounding safe area.

Flags are notes, not a win condition

You win by revealing every non-mine tile — you never have to flag anything. Flags simply mark tiles you are confident about so you do not click them by accident and so chording (double-click reveals) can read your intent.

Flag too many tiles and you create confusion; flag too few and you may click a mine. Use flags when a tile is logically certain, then keep re-checking as the board changes.

How zero areas flood-reveal

A tile showing no number (blank/zero) has no mines in any neighbor. When you open it, the game automatically opens every safe neighbor, which cascades outward through connected blank tiles. This flood reveal often opens a large region at the start of a game, giving you a safe beachhead to reason from.

Your first safe strategy

Most boards protect your first click — on Sweeper Games the first reveal is always safe. Open a tile near the center of the board, let the zero area expand, then work the frontier: pick numbers that are nearly solved and resolve their remaining neighbors.

As a beginner, prefer boards with low mine density (Beginner is 9×9 with 10 mines). Play a few boards slowly, reading every number aloud, before chasing speed.
